The College believes that work completed away from the classroom provides an opportunity for pupils to develop, reinforce and practise important key skills, for example organisation, time management, perseverance, diligence and independent enquiry - to name a few.
There is also a strong positive link between the completion of homework and pupil attainment*. It has been documented that pupils completing homework showed between 5-8 months additional progress.
We realise that for a variety of reasons some pupils may have difficulty completing homework. The College aims to ensure that all pupils have the opportunity to profit from the benefit that completing homework brings and for that reason will support pupils in their completion of homework. If a pupil, as a consequence of not completing homework indicates that they need help, and a reminder and second chance has been given, a Homework Support slip (HSS) may be completed by the teacher. This may also arise if the standard of the submitted work is not appropriate to the ability of the pupil.
- Once a pupil has accumulated two HSS both the pupil and parent/carer will be informed that the pupil will be required to attend an after-school homework support session. This session will be staffed and the pupil will be expected to complete the homework, or other appropriate work.
- These sessions will operate on Thursdays from 3.30pm to 4.30pm.
- If you are one of the many who gain information about your child by following the BehaviourWatch updates, you will be in a position to monitor homework completion rates and approaching homework support sessions and therefore be in a position to support the College’s drive for better outcomes for all our pupils.
- The college will endeavour to contact parents/carers to indicate that a pupil will be attending a Homework Support session.
- During this session the pupil's teacher will attend to provide support in completion of the specific piece of homework. The environment within the session is ideal to the completion of homework and resources are made available to aid progress, e.g. laptops.
Additionally, pupils should be reminded that if they have difficulty with any work, they should in the first instance find and speak with their subject teacher and failing this speak with their form tutor. In most situations staff allow several days from setting homework before the deadline and pupils should familiarise themselves, as soon as possible, with the work so that in the event that difficulty arises they have an opportunity to seek assistance.
In addition to our Homework Support Sessions, there is also a homework club which many pupils already attend voluntarily. This operates every Monday and Wednesday in the Learning Resource Centre from 3.30pm to 5.00pm.
