Stories from Cromwell's Past : Cromwell Remembers

Background to the Project

Mr Doyle (father of two girls attending Cromwell) suggested one year ago, that a board be put up in Cromwell to remember those who had died in active service after attending Cromwell.

Miss Roberts (KS Manager) and Miss Dalton (Head of History) decided to make this part of an extended project as part of our work with the community. We spoke to pupils, who wanted to link this project with the school website, and so came with the idea of the website page dedicated to those who had attended Cromwell and fought for their country.

We put an advert in the paper and asked for any body who had stories about CCC or the war - we have since spoken to several people who have been extremely helpful, including Mr Curtis who came in and spoke to two of our Year 8s for some time about his experiences.

The pupils are currently writing up reports of their interviews and what they have found out about those who have served their country and their experiences of school here.

Some pupils wanted to recognise that 2009 was the first year that we were remembering all of the dead from WW1 particularly as there are no surviving soldiers now. They wrote their own poems inspired by stories they have heard. Some of them are about soldiers’ experiences and some are about how we remember.

Poem by Eve Gladwin (2009)

We now have freedom,
It makes my heart full of pride,
To know that those soldiers,
Were ordinary men inside.

I know that you fought hard and long,
I know it must have been hard to go on,
But you won the battle, you won the war,
England was united like never before.

In my heart I cry for all the pain,
But you saved us from taking much more,
So we wear the poppy, well never forget,
Those British lads who won the war.
