Psychology is one of the most popular A levels in the country. It will appeal to students who have
an interest in the mind and how it works. Psychologists attempt to describe and explain a variety of
human behaviours and during the course you will be addressing questions such as:
- Can we rely on our memories?
- Why do we get stressed?
- Why do some people give in to peer pressure?
- What is normal/abnormal behaviour?
What Will I Study?
The AS course consists of six units:
Module 1
Cognitive psychololgy: Models of Memory / Memory in everyday life
Developmental Psychology: Attachment/ Attachment in everyday life
Research Methods
Module 2
Biological Psychology: Stress as a bodily response / Stress in everyday life
Social Psychology: Social Influence / Social influence in everyday life
Individual Differences: Defining and explaining psychological abnormality /treating abnormality.
The A2 course consists of:
Module 3
Three topics selected from the following:
- Biological Rhythms and Sleep
- Perception
- Relationships
- Aggression
- Eating Behaviour
- Gender
- Intelligence and Learning
- Cognition and Development
Module 4
Three topics selected from the following:
- Psychopathology: One topic chosen from:
- Schizophrenia
- Depression
- Anxiety Disorders
- Psychology In Action: One topic chosen from:
- Media Psychology
- The Psychology of Addictive Behaviour
- Anomalistic Psychology
- Psychological Research and The Scientific Method
How Will I Study?
The aim of the course is to study psychological theories, research, terminology, concepts, studies
and methods. You will develop the skills of analysis, interpretation and evaluation and an understanding
of different areas of psychology. Assignments will include a range of activities alongside note-taking,
such as developing PowerPoint presentations, writing essays, carrying out webquests and taking part in
discussions and debate.
How Will I Be Assessed?
Assessment for AS is by two modular examinations.
Assessment for A2 is by two modular examinations.
Trips and Visits
Practising psychologists have been invited to contribute to relevant parts of the course, for example
an educational psychologist talking about his work with children at risk. Visits have been arranged to
take part in a conference with research psychologists and to meet practising psychologists in London.
Careers and Future Opportunities
Degrees in Psychology, Sports Science, Cognitive Science, Social Science, Business Studies, Marketing and Advertising.
Careers in Clinical Psychology, Criminology, Occupational Psychology, Health service, Social Work, Social Administration,
Teaching and Management.
