Welcome to the Art Department

The Art Department at Cromwell is an exciting and positive environment that enables pupils to learn in a relaxed but structured way, developing their confidence to produce excellent art work. In the last few years we have worked with Design Technology to encompass a wider range of processes to enable all pupils to access the curriculum. The Art Department is in the Performing Acts Faculty which includes Dance, Drama, Music and P.E. the flexibility of each department enables excellent shared experiences and mutual support between staff.

Department Aim

The aim of the Department is to provide an exciting and enjoyable experience for the pupils in the development of their art, to increase the learning opportunities further and expand the equipment, resources and materials to all art pupils.

Our vision is to encourage an enthusiastic, creative and caring environment where pupils can develop their own personal style and imaginative response.

The Programme of Study

We encourage links across the College curriculum in particular Design Technology, Humanities, Maths and PSHE, where we have activity days and trips out.

In Year 7 pupils follow a comprehensive study of form “Elements of Art”. The aim is to improve basic drawing skills and encourage the pupils to be confident in their own abilities enabling them to succeed in their topic work. Working individually and in groups.

Our Programme of Study for Year 8 reinforces both technical process, ability and pupil ownership with project based themes. Allowing the pupil to experiment and develop their own ideas creating interesting art work. In Year 9 pupils are given GCSE coursework topics with the same component criteria, to encourage pupils to develop their own personal style within a monitored structure. Pupils are expected to keep a sketchbook and experiment with their ideas.

In Years 10 and 11 we offer a wide range of disciplines through the Edexcel Examination Board i.e. Art and Design, Fine Art, Pottery and Photography. We pick 3 or 4 topics for the pupils and they develop their own ideas with the use of various media, we work as a team within the Department to help support the pupils and staff.

Years 12 and 13 we support the individual needs of the student where we aim to offer a diverse and interesting level of study. The size of the classes and the teacher/student ratio is excellent enabling in depth study to all students at AS and A2.
