The English Department at Cromwell is an exciting place to teach and learn. The Department are enthusiastic, innovative and creative in our approach to teaching and learning and strongly believe that students achieve their best if they are enjoy and are engaged in a subject. It is our aim to provide students with a full programme of study in English Language and Literature along with developing an enjoyment for the subject.

Teachers of English develop students’ skills for all aspects of writing; particularly creative, argumentative and analytical writing. We also offer a wide selection of reading material for students to delve into. Lessons are delivered regularly in the Learning Resource Centre to enable students to develop their skills for reading independently and as a group. Not only will students develop these skills for English, they will also increase their Personal Learning and Thinking Skills, which enable them to work independently, collaboratively and creatively in preparation for possible challenges that they may face in their future careers.

A requirement for English from the ages of 11-16, is to complete speaking and listening assessments and we pride ourselves in the way we make this part of students’ development particularly fun and exciting. We develop the students’ confidence and ability to listen to and consider other ideas during these lessons and increase their enthusiasm for English.
