GCSE Drama
What Will I Study?
You will follow the EDEXCEL syllabus. This is a demanding, challenging and stimulating course which will enable you to develop valuable and
transferable skills. You will cover a range of themes and issues, plays and playwrights, performance style sand techniques. The course is designed to
give you a practical working knowledge and understanding of drama and theatre.
How Will I Learn?
You will do important written work. You will also perform in front of a live audience on a regular basis. You will be constantly working towards
an end product when you will see the fruits of your labour through the performances you create for examination purposes. There will be rehearsals out
of school hours and also theatre trips; you must be prepared to attend these.
How Will I Be Assessed?
Drama coursework will make up 60% of the final grade, with Drama Performance adding the remaining 40%. This performance is externally assessed for
one of the following options: Devised Performance, Performance Support or Scripted Performance. The coursework element has two units: Drama Exploration
1 and Drama Exploration 2. These both have practical elements supported by a portfolio of documentary evidence. Coursework is teacher marked but Drama
Performance is externally marked.
Will There Be Any Homework?
This is a demanding and challenging course. You must be ready to attend rehearsals and trips out of usual College time. The written portfolio work
will also largely be done as homework.
What Do I Need for Drama?
You will need to be interested and enthusiastic. In addition, punctuality and good attendance are necessary. You will need to work as part of a team,
taking the lead on occasions, as well as working independently. Meeting deadlines, working under pressure, managing your time and having good motivation
are important. You must be able to listen to others, communicate well and be creative. In choosing this option you are agreeing to be videoed as part of
the assessment process if necessary.
Further Opportunies
You could take this course to prepare for advanced level courses such as an A/AS Level in Drama or you may need to strengthen your grades by
completing a foundation or intermediate vocational qualification. With further training, you could go into a job related to drama such as working in
the Film, Television or Theatre industries. You may also like to look at joining a theatre group to increase your drama and theatre experience. You
could also go straight into employment and do further training or part time study with the support of your employer.
