Facilities

The music department has 3 practice rooms with pianos and a drumkit which students use at break and lunchtimes. There are two teaching rooms, one of which is a fully equipped keyboard room.

Key Stage 3

Students study a wide variety of topics including Rock ā€˜n’ Roll, Pop music, Fanfares, Film music and Samba. Lessons can involve paired work on the keyboards or working in small groups in the practice rooms. In all topics students able to improve their skills in listening, composing and performing.

Key Stage 4

For GCSE Music, students continue to study their own instrument or voice. They also learn how to compose their own music in a variety of different styles. There are four areas of study:

  • My Music - Students select their own pieces to practise; some of which they will perform in a final exam. They also perform as part of an ensemble and study the techniques used by their instrument or voice
  • Shared Music - This area of study is about musicians playing together in different styles from all over the world and different time periods. Gamelan, Indian music and jazz are all covered in this unit
  • Dance Music - This unit involves studying the music (and the steps!) behind different genres of dance. It covers everything from classical Viennese waltzes to 21st Century club dancing
  • Descriptive Music - Students study music written to describe scenes or stories through the study of film music and 19th century programme music. As part of their coursework, students can write a short piece of music to match the mood of a scene from a film
