Where will I study:

Cromwell Community College Hair and Beauty Salon is located next to the Dining Hall in the college. Our new facilities provide an excellent learning opportunity and create a realistic working environment.

Who is the course for?

If you are interested in a career in the Hairdressing or Beauty Industry this is the course for you!

Aims of the course:

The course will provide you with knowledge of the theoretical and practical aspects of the NVQ Certificate in Hair and Beauty Therapy, which meet the needs of a practicing Hairdresser or Beauty Therapist. To achieve this you will work within a group, you will be able to solve problems and communicate with a wide range of people. The course will offer you an excellent opportunity into the Hairdressing industry.

Objective:

On successfully completing NVQ Certificate in Hairdressing Level 1 you will be able to:

• G20 Make sure your own actions reduce risks to Health & Safety
• G2 Assist with salon reception duties
• G3 Contribute to the development of effective working relationships
• GH3 Prepare for hairdressing services and maintain work areas
• GH1 Shampoo and condition hair
• GH2 Blow-drying hair
• GH3 Assist with hair colour services
• GH5 Assist with perming hair services
• GH6 Plait and twist hair using basic techniques

On successfully completing NVQ Certificate in Beauty Therapy Level 1 you will be able to:

• G20 Make sure your own actions reduce risks to Health & Safety
• G2 Assist with salon reception duties
• G3 Contribute to the development of effective working relationships
• B1 Prepare and maintain salon treatment work areas
• B2 Assist with facial skincare treatment
• B3 Assist with day make-up
• N1 Assist with nail services

How is the work assessed?

The Hair and Beauty course is a hands-on course which helps pupils develop their artistic flair, communication skills and customer care. Throughout the course the pupils will practice on each other to gain their skills and confidence, then work on paying clients in a real working environment for assessments. Students will need to produce a portfolio of their practical work they have completed and the knowledge and understanding they have gathered through oral, written assignments and projects to achieve a NVQ.

Where will this course take me?

The awarding body is V.T.C.T (Vocation Training Charitable Trust) and both they and Cromwell Community College aim to provide you with an opportunity to develop skills, knowledge and understanding of the vocational area.

This course will help you make more informed decisions about future careers and areas of further study. Successful completion of these courses enables progression to NVQ level 2 Hairdressing and Beauty Therapy. This can open doors to careers in Spa Centres, Beauty or Hairdressing sales, TV and Theatre work as a Media Make-up artist, on a cruise ship, freelance Beauty Therapist or Senior Therapist.
