Media Studies at Cromwell is an exciting and interesting subject. It is an optional subject, which
students in Cooper and Atkins might choose at the end of year 9 for study throughout years 10 and 11 at
GCSE level. The Department are enthusiastic, innovative and creative in our approach to teaching and
learning and strongly believe that students achieve their best if they enjoy and are engaged in a subject.
It is our aim to provide students with a full programme of study in Media Studies, along with developing
an enjoyment for the subject.
Teachers of Media Studies develop students’ skills in all aspects of analysis and criticism. Media texts
studied include: iconic photographs, newspapers, films, magazines, documentaries, TV advertising, music video,
marketing websites and pop culture. Lessons are delivered regularly in the ICT suites to enable students to
access material and to develop their skills in understanding the convergent nature of the media. Key areas of
textual study are the concepts of: genre, narrative and representation; media organisations and media audiences.
Not only will students develop their skills for understanding the constantly changing world of the Media,
they will also increase their Personal Learning and Thinking Skills, which enable them to work independently,
collaboratively and creatively in preparation for possible challenges that they may face in their future careers.
There are opportunities for creative work and for developing individual interests in Media Texts.

Key Stage 4 Curriculum
Students follow the WJEC exam board for GCSE Media Studies. They are assessed in a final 2 ¼ hour examination
worth 40% of the total, and through coursework pieces worth 60% of the total.
The Media Studies Department is very passionate about the subject. We also care immensely about the well being
of students and will always go the ‘extra mile’ to help students reach their potential through rigorous, challenging yet fun lessons, not only during the school day, but also through extra study sessions.
