Welcome to the Modern Foreign Languages Department
Welcome to the Modern Foreign Languages department at Cromwell Community College. Our students will be competing for jobs
in the 21st century in a global market and the department aims to equip all students with the skills necessary for helping
them succeed in this.
Languages Taught
All students begin languages at Cromwell with French in Year 7; students then study Spanish in addition to French in Years
8 and 9. At GCSE, students can opt for French or Spanish, and for French Leisure & Tourism and Spanish Leisure & Tourism.
There are plans to offer French A Level in partnership with Neale-Wade Community College starting in Autumn 2010. Whilst
at Cromwell we concentrate on French and Spanish, all students will pick up the skills needed to learn any language: strategies
for memorising and learning vocabulary, listening or reading carefully even when you do not understand everything, looking for
patterns and applying rules.

Facilities
The languages department has a suite of four classrooms, all equipped with data projectors for using the full range of
on-line and interactive resources. The department also has a wealth of written resources and access to the College’s
computer suites. The French curriculum is supported by the Expo series of text books, and the Spanish by Listos.
Independent Study
Regular independent learning is indispensable to the study of languages. All students are provided with an independent
studies booklet; this is invaluable for tasks set by the teacher do be done at home, for the learning of vocabulary and
for work if a student is unfortunate enough to be away from College for any reason. Students can also access many of
the teaching resources on the College’s computer network. In addition to this, the department subscribes to two websites
which students can access at home:

Trips and Visits
Following a successful residential visit by Year 8 and Year 9 to France in Summer 2009, the department hopes to offer further
trips in the future, should support from the College governors be forthcoming.
