Office for Standards in Education (Ofsted)
Ofsted is a non-ministerial government department established under the
Education (Schools) Act 1992 to take responsibility for the inspection of all
schools in England. Its role also includes the inspection of local education
authorities, teacher training institutions and youth work. During 2001, Ofsted
became responsible for inspecting all 16-19 education and for the regulation of
early years childcare, including childminders.

Qualifications & Curriculum Authority (QCA)
The Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA) is a non-departmental public
body, sponsored by the Department for Education and Skills. It is governed by a
board, whose members are appointed by the Secretary of State for Education and
Skills, and managed on a day-to-day basis by an executive team. QCA maintains
and develops the national curriculum and associated assessments, tests and
examinations; and accredits and monitors qualifications in colleges and at work.
QCA has a pivotal role in helping the UK become the most dynamic knowledge-based
economy in the world.

Learning and Skills Development Agency (LSDA)
The Learning and Skills Development Agency is a strategic national resource for
the development of policy and practice in post-16 education and training. It
incorporates a r esearch centre, established to increase the research effort in
post-16 education and training and create a stronger, independent evidence base
to inform policy and improve practice. The focus is on strategic, longer-term
studies, creative thinking and the 'big issues'.

Basic Skills Agency (BSA)
The Basic Skills Agency is the national agency for literacy, numeracy and
related skills for England and Wales. Although funded primarily by central
government it is an independent organisation with a board of management which
includes representatives of local education authorities, employers, trade
unions, voluntary organisations, further education colleges, and other national
and training organisations. It provides a wide range of organisations with
advice and support to develop high quality programmes to help children, young
people and adults to improve their basic skills. It has also developed the
Observatory of basic skills - www.basic-skills-observatory.co.uk - which
includes information on policy, practice and research on literacy, numeracy and
language across all age ranges.
