Art

The Art Department has enjoyed considerable success over the past few years raising standards and achievement in the GCSE Examinations. In the 2004 Examination Series 88% of candidates attained an A-C pass and our recent results still retained an impressive pass rate. In addition, the department has introduced a vocational course in art and design (Applied Art) to compliment the existing single award specification.

In September 2005, we began our first AS course in Art & Design and the department aims to build on its success and offer a diverse and interesting level of study for Post 16 students.

In Year 7, students follow a comprehensive study into the elements of art to improve their basic drawing skills. The schemes of work on offer at Year 8 reinforce both technical process and ability. In Year 9, students begin to develop their own personal style and response before they decide upon their option for GCSE.
Art is a popular choice at Cromwell Community College and the subject is supported by three full time and one part time art teacher. Additional provision is offered by a specialist art technician, administration staff and learning support unit. The department has two classrooms, a dedicated Post 16 teaching area and extensive storage areas. 3D studies enjoy the facility of a kiln and pottery wheel. In 2006, an adjacent classroom will be opened within the art & design block that has been extensively refurbished for ICT.

We arrange visits each year to the National Gallery, Tate Gallery and Royal Academy Exhibitions for Year 10, 11 & 12 students. We invite artists and designers to visit the school and contribute to the programme of study on offer in the GCSE and GCE courses. The aim of the department is to increase these opportunities further and increase the equipment, resources and materials available to art students. Our vision is to encourage an enthusiastic and creative environment where all students can develop their own personal style and imaginative response.
