Technology Overview
Design and Technology at Cromwell is essentially a practical subject and aims to
prepare students to participate in tomorrows rapidly changing technologies. It
involves students in designing and making activities in a range of materials,
encouraging them to think creatively and develop practical solutions to a range
of problems.
Students are offered a range of experiences at KS3 and explore product design
through the specialist areas of resistant materials, graphics, food and
textiles. The design process of identifying needs, research, design, planning
making and evaluation are fundamental to their project work. Students are
introduced to a range of practical skills including the use of Computer Aided
Design and Manufacture, whilst developing an understanding of aesthetics, social
and environmental issues, design in society and industrial awareness. Strategies
for the teaching of Design & Technology at Cromwell include the use of FOCUSSED
PRACTICAL TASKS as well as DESIGN & MAKE PROJECTS.
|
At KS3 students are taught on a carousel of either 4 or 5 rotations which cover
the specialist areas. At KS4 students have the opportunity to opt for 1 or more
of the subjects which we offer although it is recommended that due to the nature
of the coursework that only the more work conscious students take more than one
subject.
Design and Technology is a vast subject that calls on the knowledge and concepts
developed within all other areas of the curriculum, building upon these in a
practical manner and bringing to life the whole school curriculum. Through D&T
students become discriminating and informed users of products, as well as
developing a realisation that progress in design often follows innovation in the
areas of material development.

Differentiation within the department is promoted via outcomes and extension
tasks. At Key Stage 3, design & make projects are set where students have the
opportunity to interpret a starting point which has been selected by staff to
ensure the coverage of a range of Programmes of Study. However, within these
constraints students have the opportunity to develop ownership of a project
through negotiation with the teacher. In Key Stage 4 this process evolves, until
considerable student autonomy and differentiation is provided within the final
GCSE project
We believe in raising standards of achievement appropriate to the age, ability,
future potential and career aspirations of each individual student.
Can you help?
The D&T department needs as many donations as possible to continue to produce a
high standard of work. If you or your company can donate materials of any size,
machines, equipment, and computers or to give students an insight into the
industrial world, then the department would be very gratefulThank you for your support.
