English

Introduction

“English is a vital way of communicating in school, public life and internationally. Literature in English is rich and influential, reflecting the experience of people from many countries and times. In studying English, pupils develop skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing. It enables them to express themselves creatively, imaginatively and to communicate with the others effectively.” (English National Curriculum)

The English and Media Studies Department are committed to achieving high standards of excellence and we encourage our students to be responsible, highly motivated, well-mannered young people, equipped for the challenges of further education and employment. We provide an environment in which all pupils have access to an inspiring, broad and rich curriculum. To complement this, and to further stimulate an interest in English and Media, we arrange a number of day and residential trips, as well as having visitors and theatre companies coming in to school.

Getting Results

We are extremely proud of our exam results at KS3, which have kept us at the top in Fenland for the past two years, and we are also seeing a steady improvement each year in our GCSE results. To help students achieve their best in exams, there are additional study sessions after school (and even at weekends!) and Aiming High evenings so that parents know how they can help too.

Exciting Developments

The start of A Level English at Cromwell, is exciting and will offer our students greater choice when selecting courses in further education. The take-up of English at A Level has been very good.
