'A Man without history is like a tree without roots.' - Marcus Garvey

Welcome to History at Cromwell Community College. This is an exciting time for the history department, and the school in general. In September 2006 we launched History at A2 level on the back of a very successful first year for the subject at AS level as part of the new Sixth-Form. Moreover, in May 2006 the Humanities faculty (of which History is part) was relocated to a modern, specially-designed complex with facilities and technological support that is cutting-edge. There are now seven brand new classrooms for our students, with interactive 'smart' boards and ICT provision exclusive to the new building. This exciting development comes in the midst of Cromwell College's bid for Specialist Status in Humanities with English. The leadership provided by the Humanities faculty - and History's role within that - will see the department go from strength to strength in 2006 and beyond.

Who's who?

There are three full-time historians in the department, bringing together a range and depth of expertise and experience in the subject.

Mr. P. Horley BA, MBA

Mr Horley is Head of Humanities and took up the post in 1993. He was previously Head of History at St Peter's School, Huntingdon. He has a B.A. degree in History from the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne and an MBA in Church Administration from Bishop Grosseteste College, Lincoln and the University of Hull. He specialised in 19th & 20th century European History. During his teaching career he has taught all the Humanities subjects, English, and both Politics and Economics up to A Level.

Miss. H. Galilee MA

Miss Galilee has taught history at Cromwell since 1998 and has been head of department since 2002. She holds a BA in History and Philosophy from the University of Lancaster, a PGCE from the University of Gloucestershire and an MA in Education from The Open University. Miss Galilee worked in the heritage industry before entering the teaching profession and firmly believes that visits to historic sites can really bring history alive for students.

Mr. N. Bennett MA

Mr Bennett graduated from the University of East Anglia with an honours degree and a Master of Arts, specialising in twentieth century political history. Before taking the PGCE in history at the University of York, Mr Bennett was an actor, working for various theatre companies in the north. He has taught in several schools abroad, living and working in Italy, Russia and Malaysia. Mr. Bennett joined the history team in September 2005 and currently teaches history through to 'A' level, citizenship and drama.
