Cromwell Community College is proud of the ongoing work it is undertaking to support the wellbeing and positive mental health of our students; work that has been recognised through a Silver Carnegie Award. We firmly believe that the mental health and wellbeing of our students is a top priority and by working together with parents we can support our students to fulfil their potential in a safe and nurturing environment.

  • We continue to raise awareness of wellbeing, through assemblies, PSHE days, group work, staff training, parent information sessions, newsletters and articles.
  • Provide excellent wellbeing support from our Inclusion Team; providing 1 to 1 sessions and evidence based group interventions.
  • We are able to refer to a range of external agencies, such as CHUMSEMBRACE and CAMH for additional support for our students.

Mental Health Support Team (MHST)

Mental Health Support Teams are a government run programme, intended to find early mental health support to children and young people in education settings with mild to moderate mental health concerns. Cromwell have signed up to be part of this programme and now have a team of NHS staff linked to the school available to provide support. These clinical staff, trained in mental health, are able to provide individual face-to-face interventions as well as group work.

Young Minds

Parents and carers of children who are suffering with their mental health and are waiting for support from CAMHS, can contact the Parent Helpline at Young Minds on 0808 802 5544.

Young Minds have trained advisors who will listen to your concerns and ask key questions, to understand your situation as best they can. They will tailor advice to your situation and suggest practical steps for you to take and ways to support your child whilst waiting to access help from services. This could include contact details for relevant support services, practical tips you can implement at home or giving you advice around alternative options for support.

Additional Support

A new mental health free text messaging support service has launched in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough to help those who are struggling to cope.

Launched by NHS Cambridgeshire & Peterborough and in partnership with the national service SHOUT, the free to use text service HEAR 85258 provides real-time support to people of all ages who are struggling with their mental health.

When texting the word HEAR to 85258, the person will be connected to a trained volunteer who will take them from a place of crisis to a place of calm. During the confidential and anonymous conversation, the texter will be supported and signposted to local and national mental health services.

Texting HEAR to 85258 is free, discreet and runs 24/7. It won’t appear on any bills and requires no app, data, password, or registration. It is available for anybody who lives, works, or studies in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough.

We are a fully inclusive school and are very proud of our commitment to ensuring every single child we educate feels safe, welcome and able to express themselves confidently.

We are have recently gained accreditation from the Kite Trust, an organisation that aims to promote the health, well-being and inclusion of LGBTQ+ young people across Cambridgeshire raising awareness, supporting, and educating our local communities. By working with students and staff we aim to use the Rainbow Flag Award to ensure we build a environment in which all students can feel safe and secure in.

At Cromwell Community College it is our aim to identify and support all of our young carers.  A young carer is a child under 18 who regularly helps to look after a family member or friend who is disabled, ill, has a mental health condition or addiction problem.

Children may engage in:

  • Practical tasks (cooking, housework and shopping)
  • Physical care (lifting or helping someone use the stairs)
  • Personal care (dressing, washing, helping with toilet needs)
  • Managing the family budget (collecting benefits and prescriptions)
  • Managing medication
  • Looking after younger siblings
  • Helping someone communicate

The College is committed to meeting the needs of young carers so they can attend and enjoy school in the same way as other pupils and achieve their potential.

Cromwell has designated young carers’ school leads (see details below) with responsibility for young carers and their families.  Pupils are made aware of these staff and how to contact them to access support.  The College actively seeks feedback and ideas from all pupils, including young carers, to shape and improve support.

Cromwell has a very effective referral system and strong partnership in place with relevant external agencies including the local young carers’ service at Centre 33. Where appropriate, information is shared with professionals and other agencies on a need to know basis in order for possible further support to be accessed.

You can also visit Carers Trust Cambridgeshire for information on news and events in the area.

The Young Carers Group

Centre 33 has appointed Nicky Hornsby as the Project Worker for our Cromwell Young Carers. She will run group activities as well as 1-1 appointments with some of our Young Carers.

Cromwell Community College is one of very few schools in the country who has been awarded the Young Carers in School Gold Award. Such an award reflects that we aim to meet the needs of this vulnerable pupil group and this was recognised by Ofsted during our last inspection.

Please remember that if any of our Young Carers have any queries or concerns, or require support of any kind in school, our Young Carer email address is youngcarers@cromwell.cambs.sch.uk.

Alternatively they can also speak to Mrs Pritchard, Miss Tooke or Mrs Brittain or telephone 01354 692193. All contact will be treated in the strictest confidence.
