As part of our Year 1 literacy lessons we were learning about onomatopoeia (noisy words) the children thoroughly enjoyed thinking of noisy words and filling our tables with examples. They then used these words in their literacy to write poetry.

In maths we have been learning all about addition and subtraction and have been using part whole models, number lines, bar models and tens frames to help us solve these equations.

As part of our art unit we designed and made creativity medals and the children awarded them to each other and explained why they were awarding their medal to their friend. The children came up with some lovely explanations, and it was a joy to listen to their ideas.

Our Science has been learning about the seasons and weather so we went on a spring walk to see what signs of spring we could find. We also made weather wheels so we can record the weather and identify any patterns in the weather in the various seasons.

The children have thoroughly enjoyed exploring the watercolour paints in our art lessons and have explored many techniques including wet on wet painting, wet on dry and colour washes.

We also had a magical day at the Year 1 Mock Wedding. Everyone looked absolutely fantastic and the children had a fabulous time. Thank you to all of the parents and carers for organising the outfits.

Year 1 have been very busy this week practising our Christmas songs and performing to the school, which was fabulous.
We have also been reading The Jolly Postman book this week and have been making predictions based on the book and learning to use the word 'and' to extend our sentences and make them more interesting.
In maths we have been exploring the part whole model and have been using these to help us partition and combine numbers. The children have also been using the knowledge they have learnt over the week to solve missing number problems.

Wow, what a fantastic first week back and a great start to Year 1!
We were so proud of how well the children came in and settled into their new classroom. The children have had a great time exploring their classroom and we have thoroughly enjoyed spending some time getting to know each other.
