Year 3

What a fantastic week of learning we have had in Year 3!

English 

In English, we have been developing our understanding of formal and informal letter writing. The children have explored the differences between the two styles and identified the features that make a letter formal or informal.

We were also excited to finally finish our class text, Marcy and the Riddle of the Sphinx! The children thoroughly enjoyed following Marcy's thrilling adventure. Over the coming weeks, the children will be planning and writing a letter to Arthur, taking on the role of Marcy, to inform him all about the incredible journey she has been on and the challenges she has overcome.

Maths 

In Maths, we have continued to develop and secure our place value knowledge. The children have been using their known number facts to help them solve problems and have explored a range of strategies to find pairs of numbers that total 100. It has been wonderful to see their confidence and fluency growing.

Art 

Our budding artists have been learning about prehistoric cave art. The children created their own caves using paper and even climbed inside to experience what it may have felt like to create artwork in a cave! This week, they have been using charcoal to create cave-inspired drawings and have also made their own mini caves ready to decorate with hand-painted cave art.

Geography 

In Geography, we have been learning about the water cycle and how water moves around our environment. We have also explored the River Severn, the longest river in the United Kingdom, discovering where it begins in Wales and tracing its journey south until it reaches the sea.

PE 

The children have really enjoyed their basketball lessons this week. They have been practising their dribbling, passing and shooting skills, showing great enthusiasm and determination as they improve their technique.

Computing 

Computing continues to be a firm favourite! The children are becoming much more confident and efficient at turning on their computers, logging in independently and accessing the programmes they need for their learning.

Times Tables Rock Stars ⭐

We have had a big push with Times Tables Rock Stars recently. Thank you for your continued support at home. Please encourage your child to keep practising regularly and watch their heat map turn green as they build their times table fluency and confidence.

Year 3 have had a fantastic start to the new school year! The children have embraced new challenges with enthusiasm and have been developing their independence across all areas of learning. We are incredibly proud of how quickly they have settled into their new routines and responsibilities.

In Maths, we have been revisiting our understanding of place value, exploring number bonds to 10 and 20 and learning how this knowledge helps us when adding and subtracting numbers. The children have shown great confidence in using these skills to solve mathematical problems.

In English, we have been enjoying the opening chapters of Marcy and the Riddle of the Sphinx. Through our learning, the children have worked collaboratively to complete exciting challenges inspired by the story. They have been developing their writing skills by using imperative verbs, coordinating and subordinating conjunctions, and writing clear instructions to help them board Ra's Sun Boat and capture the Moon Eye!

The children have particularly enjoyed being outside during our Art lessons. We have been exploring Stone Age art, learning about early forms of drawing and creating our own cave art using charcoal. It has been wonderful to see the children's creativity come to life as they experimented with different techniques.

In Computing, the children have been accessing Century and are becoming increasingly confident at logging in independently and completing their learning nuggets. Please continue to encourage your child to complete any assigned learning at home each week to support their progress.

We are delighted with the positive start Year 3 have made and look forward to sharing more of their learning journey throughout the year.
