Year 5

What a fantastic summer term it has been in Year 5! The children have worked incredibly hard and have embraced every opportunity with enthusiasm, resilience and a positive attitude.

One of the highlights of the term has been our Forest School orienteering sessions. The children developed their map-reading and navigation skills, learning how to work together to solve challenges and find their way around the woodland environment. It was wonderful to see their confidence, teamwork and problem-solving skills grow as they explored the outdoors.

In maths, our Maths Surgery sessions have given pupils the chance to strengthen their understanding through practising reasoning and problem-solving. The children have shown great determination when tackling challenging questions, explaining their thinking clearly and applying their mathematical knowledge in a range of different contexts.

The children had a wonderful day exploring Shepreth zoo, learning about a variety of animals and their habitats. The trip helped bring our learning to life and gave us the chance to think about conservation and the importance of protecting wildlife around the world.

In English, we enjoyed studying Shakespeare's Macbeth and taking part in a range of drama activities to deepen our understanding of the play. The children impressed us with their acting skills as they brought key scenes and characters to life. Through role play and discussion, they explored themes, motives and emotions within the story, developing both their confidence and their speaking and listening skills.

Our learning about the environment has encouraged us to think carefully about the world around us. We have explored the impact of landfill and pollution, discussing the challenges facing our planet and considering ways we can all make a positive difference. The children shared thoughtful ideas through debating and persuasive writing about reducing waste, recycling and caring for the environment for future generations.

Another memorable event this term was our Big Science Share. It was lovely to welcome families into school and share our learning together. The children thoroughly enjoyed demonstrating their scientific knowledge and practical skills through a range of activities and investigations. Thank you to all the parents and carers who attended and helped make the afternoon such a success.

We wish everyone a wonderful summer break and look forward to seeing all the exciting achievements our Year 5 children will accomplish as they move into Year 6!

What an exciting and action packed term it has been! Year 5 have been diving into new experiences, learning in creative ways, and showing fantastic enthusiasm in every subject.

During our visit to the local church, we became architecture detectives looking at all the different ways Christians worship Jesus. The children examined arches, stained glass windows, pillars, and other fascinating features, discussing how each part plays a role in both the history and structure of the building. Their curiosity, and the thoughtful questions they asked, made the visit truly memorable.

During an extended Science week, we looked even closer at the world around us, literally! Using microscopes, the children explored everyday objects and natural materials, amazed at the tiny patterns and details that can’t be seen with the naked eye. From leaf veins to fabric fibres, every slide brought a new sense of wonder.

A definite highlight was our pizza making session. The classroom was filled with smiles (and delicious smells!) as everyone designed their own pizza. Rolling dough, choosing toppings, and seeing their creations come to life was not only fun but also a great opportunity to practise following instructions and working methodically.

In English, we stepped into the role of journalists. The children learnt how to write clear, engaging newspaper reports, complete with catchy headlines, quotes, and the all important five Ws (who, what, where, when, why). Their finished pieces were full of creativity and confidence.

What an exciting and energetic half term it has been! Our classroom (and even our forest school area) have been alive with learning, laughter, creativity, and plenty of muddy boots!

During Forest School, the children truly embraced the outdoors. They took part in a hands on science experiment, exploring how thermal insulators work. We also combined this with some outdoor creative writing, using the natural environment to inspire rich vocabulary and vivid descriptions. And yes, everyone got wonderfully muddy!

In English, the children have been diving into the world of Norse mythology. After exploring gods, giants, magical realms, and mythical creatures, they have now begun crafting their own original Norse myths. We’ve seen imaginative heroes, dramatic battles, enchanted weapons, and even a mischievous trickster or two! The children have impressed with their descriptive language, creative plot twists, and powerful storytelling voices.

As part of Cyber Week , the children took part in several online voices, kind choices workshops. These interactive sessions helped them understand how to make safe choices online, protect personal information, and recognise when something doesn’t feel right. The workshops were engaging, relevant, and gave pupils practical strategies they can use every day. They even watched themselves on the big screen and cannot wait to share this with you.

In English, the children have been studying the life of Colonel Chris Hadfield and have produced some fantastic biographies for their final project. Their lessons involved becoming biography detectives where they were exploring the features of biographies as well as lessons involving role play and becoming Chris Hadfield for a question-and-answer session.

In maths, we have been looking at short multiplication and short division. The children have been enjoying this unit of maths.

In Science, we have been exploring Space. Discussions have included whether we think the Earth is flat or round and completing experiments to help with this thinking, as well as learning about the other planets in our solar system.

We have been dancing in PE this term, looking at different dances from around the world. We are building up to something that we are all excited about!

In DT we have been making CAMS models that involve a space theme. The children have used their measuring skills, working out how big their frame needs to be as well as how long to cut their dowel.
