Year 6 have made a brilliant start to the year and are really embracing the challenges, responsibilities and privileges that come with being the oldest children in the school. There has been plenty of excitement about finally earning their place on the assembly benches!
As the children begin their own Year 6 journey, we have been exploring themes of migration, belonging and new beginnings through the wonderful book The Arrival by Shaun Tan. The story has sparked some fantastic discussions in our reading lessons as we have explored the characters, made inferences and considered the author's choices. These conversations have inspired our writing, helping the children to produce thoughtful and imaginative diary entries from different characters perspectives.
The children have been fascinated by their study of the Ancient Maya, particularly learning about the powerful ruler known as the Bloodletting Queen. They have also loved the opportunity to visit the Secondary Phase for music, art and French lessons.
One of the highlights of the term so far was our Skills Builder Day, where the children became detectives for the day, working in teams to solve the mystery of the stolen chocolate! Along the way, they developed important skills including teamwork, communication, problem-solving and presenting their findings to an audience. It was a fun-filled day that challenged the children to think creatively while working with different classmates.
To support our PSHE learning, Year 6 also took part in the Healthy Schools "Catch Your Breath" programme. During an interactive workshop, the children explored the risks associated with smoking and vaping and discussed the importance of making positive, healthy choices. The session prompted some thoughtful questions and discussions, which we will continue to build on in future lessons.
